Last month, Nicholas and I went to the Horror Hound convention in Sharonville, Ohio, close to where we live. We've talked about going many times, and this year he pulled the trigger and bought the tickets at 4am Friday morning during a fit of insomnia. When I was dropping him off at work a couple of hours later, he told me about the plans he had made for our weekend.
People love horror and comic conventions for loads of reasons, and it turns out I'm no exception. Just a few of the things that have me coming back in September to do this again:
I love all the costumes! Granted, I'm not too dressed up here - but I had about 12 hours of warning that this was happening, and I also wanted to get a feel for things before deciding 1) if there would be a next time (spoiler alert: there will be), and 2) exactly how far I want to go with the costume (second spoiler alert: I'll be going all out next time).
The panels were so interesting! It was kind of a surreal experience to be in the same room with people I've watched in movies and admired for their writing and directing for the last few decades.
The vendors had all kinds of interesting and unusual items that I normally wouldn't be able to find to purchase unless I was looking online or knew where to find the item. Most of the vendors are artists selling their own work, whether that's art prints, jewelry, hand crafted items and works of art, independent films, books, and costumes and other clothes.
I was particularly excited to find an author there selling and autographing his books. We had a great conversation about the commitment it takes to be a full time writer, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with negotiating your first television miniseries deal with a significant broadcasting network.
(Yes, that's me and a flying monkey, I'm a Wizard of Oz fan in pretty much all of its incarnations. And I don't care one bit that I have no idea who the person is inside the costume.)
I loved that Nicholas had such a good time. Horror is his thing too, and he's spent a significant part of his free time building a fantastic little collection of movie monsters, film prop replicas, and other horror film related items over the past year. I loved that we were able to add a couple of autographed pieces to his collection at this event - signed by actors at the event.
I did manage to control myself in the presence of the famous people on this outing, but I think that's just because I didn't actually get to meet Juliette Lewis. I make no promises to be so cool and in control when Robert Englund is in the same room with me... and if the hint in the ad shown at the convention is right, Kevin Smith will be there as well, in which case I will most likely lose my mind completely.
Overall we had a great time. It was creepy and fun, and there was so much creative art on display. Next time we plan to catch a couple of the film showings and more of the panels, although I have it on good authority that we will be spending one day just standing in line to meet Robert Englund. I'm ready for it though. Freddy Krueger is my favorite movie monster, and I'm not passing up the chance to tell him that not only did his character haunt my nightmares for most of my freshman year, I also loved seeing him without the Freddy mask as Gammill on Charmed, and we share June 6th as our birthday.
