What's Trending for Fall?

Let me start by saying something you'll probably hear from me a LOT if you follow my blog and my social media - I personally don't really care very much about trends. Sure, they can be fun and add a little flare to your closet. But unless you're 20-something in New York or LA, fashion trends just aren't going to be the focal point of your lifestyle. In fact, if you're Gen X like me, some of them are going to go straight on your "hell no" list.

That said, if your closet is your sanctuary, like mine is for me, it never hurts to take a look at what's trending, just to see if you want to add a little something, or maybe pull something from the back that's found its way back into style for a season. So let's dive in and see what the people who make these decisions, for better or worse, have decided we should be stocking up on for Fall 2024, according to Refinery 29:

Ok, so we're starting off with one that's a hard no for me. In fact, it's such a hard no that not only do I not have anything in my closet this color, I don't have anything for sale in this color. The fashion folks say that this very spring-like color is in for this fall, but in all honesty, I don't see why.

It doesn't help that I generally just don't like yellow. (Probably because I'm a Bengals fan, and the last color I'm going to wear - especially in the fall, during football season - is a color that reminds me of the Pittsburgh Steelers.)

If you're a fan of yellow, though, this is your time! The fashion people say this is the color to add to your wardrobe this fall to spice it up.

It looks pretty cute on this model here without a doubt. It just really isn't for me. I've expanded well beyond my primarily black wardrobe that followed me since the 90s over the last ten years, but it hasn't expanded that far. But that hat she's wearing? Now THAT is something I'm glad I added to my closet last year.

Asymmetrical Hems

I'm a long-time lover of asymmetrical hems. I have a number of them in my closet right now, and at least one for sale.

This one shown here looks fantastic with black tights, tall black boots, and a nice black sweater. (Yes, I did just say that I moved away from the all black wardrobe - but I mean... you can take the girl out of the goth shop, but you can never completely take the goth out of the girl - and this black and white dress is a nice compromise, adding a little light to the darkness of mostly black.)

Asymmetrical hems are fun and look great on everyone in my opinion, and since I'm wearing them regularly anyway, it's kind of cool that at least for this season, I'll be considered "trendy" when I wear them.

I recommend at least one asymmetrical hem shirt or dress for everybody, because they are flattering for all figures and well, like I said... I personally love them.

School Uniform Vibes

Just so you know, I only snagged this Pinterest photo because I don't have any pics of my own outfits like this handy.

I attended a private school in the 80s and 90s, so for many, many, MANY years I really hated this look. Why wouldn't I, after being forced to wear it five days a week, for twelve years?

Not to mention the fact that this has always been one of those looks that men have those fantasies about, so I just filed this away as something I would never wear again after graduating high school.

But then earlier this summer I found the cutest little blue plaid skirt, and the styling went from there.

It's nostalgic, and it will be a fun outfit to throw in the rotation for October when I'm dressing mostly costume-ish for the events that month anyway.

If you follow my Instagram or my Facebook page, you'll likely see a photo of that outfit sometime between now and Halloween, whether it's a flat lay or a full-on photo of me striking a pose in an outfit that takes me back to my youth.

Why is this popular this season? Who knows. But it will be a fun trend to play with.

Textured Fabrics

Is there anybody out there like me who loves fabrics that feel good when you touch them? This is your season!

The fashion deciders say that touchy-feely fabrics are in this fall, so pull out all your velvet, faux fur (or real fur, I don't judge), downy soft cotton, soft wool, and textured prints - it's time for them to take center stage!

My personal closet, and by extension, my online store, contain all sorts of textured fabrics and touchy-feely clothes. Also to be featured in future social media posts this fall.

To be honest, I've been happy so far with this list of trends, just because I don't have to do much to my closet to incorporate them into my outfits if I choose.

Who knew this would be the season that I would be trendy? I certainly didn't. Because as I mentioned already, I don't buy my clothes based on trends, but on what fits my personal brand and style.

Capes, Scarves, and Shawls

Oh, so very many things in my closet that I've purchased over the years and will be wearing this season! (Who am I kidding...I've been wearing them all along, I didn't need this invitation to add them to my rotation!)

How many of us have a stash of scarves we've been sitting on because our Gen Z kids told us those weren't the "in" thing anymore?

How many of us have a shawl or poncho reminiscent of the 70s just sitting in the back of our closet, waiting for its time to shine?

That time is apparently now. So get out your shawls, capes, and ponchos.

Find those YouTube videos that tell you all the cool ways to tie up your scarves around your neck.

Because these outerwear trends are what's "in" this season.

Silhouetted Clothes

Silhouetted clothing is in this fall, and I'm all about it. I don't have the perfect figure (do any of us? I mean, I've been trying to lose 25 pounds for the last 5 years), but a nicely crafted silhouette garment will accentuate your positives while camouflaging your negatives.

This one I've included here has always been one of my favorites, and I've decided it's time to pass it on to a new home.

Yes, I know, still a dark color. But it's comfortable and flattering and perfect for this silhouette trend this fall - just pair it with some leggings (because when I say this is a mini, I really mean mini) and some great boots.

Being curvy and showing it off is in (as it should always be), and I recommend jumping on this trend with both feet.

Girly-Girl, Feminine Bows and Florals

photo taken from Pinterest

My 80s and 90s girl heart is so full this fall. I haven't seen dresses like this in style since I was "borrowing" them from my mother's closet in the early 90s.

I'll be honest, I don't necessarily think this style is it for every body type, and a LOT of floral dresses of this type definitely make the wearer look bigger than they really are.

But am I excited to see them anyway? I think I am!

If the floral maxi dress isn't for you, remember you can always add some girly-girl to your style with a floral shirt, hair bows, and even floral print leggings.

And hey, if the girly-girl feminine trend isn't for you, then my advice is just skip it and stick to what you like - the same way I'm going to skip yellow and pretend I never saw that it was trending for the fall.

Longer Full Skirts

photo found on eBay

I've been searching for this one since I read the stories about fall trends.

This particular style of skirt holds pretty special memories for me - it's what I was wearing the first time my husband and I had something resembling a date.

I've always been a fan of the boho-gypsy style, and I'm excited to see it making a comeback, even if it's brief.

Generally I like having a few longer skirts around anyway, but adding this one back into the rotation makes me happy.

If boho-gypsy isn't your style, there are lots of other options when it comes to longer, full skirts - and I'm sure I'll share some of them with you this fall.

Dark Shades of Denim

poshmark.com/closet/cincitystyle

I don't know why this is considered a trend when I personally think a nice pair of dark denim jeans should be a staple in everyone's closet at all times.

I'm not saying you should be all about dark denim all the time, but some things just naturally go better with darker denim rather than light.

The pair shown here is a fantastic pair of Paige designer jeans so dark they probably shouldn't be tossed in the laundry with your whites.

Like I said, dark denim should be a staple - it looks so good with a cream colored sweater, or a nice black shirt.

And no one wears stonewash anymore. Dark is the way to go.

Low-Rise Flare Jeans

No. Just no, no, no. And I love you, PacSun, but hell no. How could you support this nightmare of a trend?

When we left this god-awful look in the 2000s, that's where it should have stayed.

The flare is fine. I've picked up a couple pairs of pants with the flare going on recently.

It's the low-rise. Just no. No one wants to see the return of thongs showing above your pants, or your tramp stamp, or your muffin top. No one wants to see any of that, and that's why we stopped wearing these horrendous jeans.

Wear the flare. But for the love of sweet baby Jesus, don't go with low-rise. Wear normal-fitting jeans. There's a lovely spot in between low-rise and mom jeans, and that's where we should be. All of us. Not just Gen X. Low rise just isn't flattering - and we all know it. We learned it twenty years ago so that the younger generation didn't have to give it a try.

Sheer Fabrics

sold item: poshmark.com/closet/cincitystyle

This particular item literally sold while I was writing this article, but it's still a pretty solid example for what I'm going for here.

Sheer fabrics are said to be "in," and I'm ok with this one too. I've always liked sheer fabrics. They're comfortable, versatile, and when they're made with a cami already underneath, who could ask for more?

Somebody is going to get alot of wear out of this one this fall, and I'm happy for them.

Now... picture it with those dark denim jeans and some black boots... see what I'm saying about dark denim?

If you're a fan of sheer fabrics like I am, snatch some up quick and you'll get plenty of use out of them this fall.

Lingerie-Style Outerwear

I'm on the fence about this one - which is silly, since I actually own lingerie-style outerwear.

I think what it comes down to for me personally is whether you're wearing "lingerie-style outerwear" or just straight up lingerie in public.

Because - call me old-fashioned if you must - I don't think you should be wearing your actual undergarments outside of your clothes out in public.

Then again, as I've said, I'm older now, and maybe the 20-somethings really want to wear their lingerie in public.

And since I don't want to be a hypocrite - if that's what you want to wear, the fashion people say now is your time.

So these are the trends for the upcoming fall season. What do you think? Will you be wearing them? or will you be passing on them, like I will be when it comes to low-rise jeans and the color yellow? Let everyone know in the comments, and give my blog a like and a follow.
